“Get Over It”

So, apparently today, in the USA it is National ‘Get Over It’ Day! I hadn't heard of this before, but for magicians, in fact for all performers and artists, it may not be such a bad idea to observe this particular day.

Personally, I'm pretty thick skinned. I've been through enough in my life to have built that armour, but I still get that dull feeling inside when someone patronises me and what I do. I know stand-up comedians who have stormed off stage when the audience didn't laugh, and singers who cried after they felt they didn't do their best onstage.

GET OVER IT!

It's hard to do, but the only way we can move on, is to move past. Do you know what I told myself when some ‘alpha male’ took my cards and threw them in the air, shouting ‘52 pick-up!’?

GET OVER IT

I wanted to knock the guy out, but even that early in my career, I wanted to be professional, so I picked up my cards and moved on.

Criticism can be hard to take, but if you're providing a service, whether in entertainment or not, and you get a mean or nasty comment, or you feel something wasn't good enough, you will end up stronger and better at your role if you find the fortitude to move on, get past it and…

GET OVER IT!

(Never stand for actual bullying though)
