The Dangers Of Life On The Road
There's a lot to be said for travelling solo, to and from gigs. When driving, I have a podcast on, or some music playing, I have my sunglasses on and the window down (if the weather allows). I like to have a bottle of water next to me and some sugar free sweets. For a longer journey, I might have a small lunch packed. Maybe a bagel and some fruit.
I learned the hard way that it is far too easy to turn eating on the go, into eating everything you can find. I used to stop at a petrol station and grab a meal deal (a salted, buttery sandwich, a sugary drink and a bag of crisps) and then I'd add a chocolate bar on top. And then I'd perform, and sometimes I'd be offered food at the event.
‘Some cake?’
‘If you insist.’
‘Sit and have a full meal with us.’
‘Okay then.’
‘Shall I just inject sugar and caffeine into your veins?’
‘Please do.’
All of that, combined with sitting behind the wheel for prolonged periods, and then coming home tired and lethargic, led to significant weight gain.
Nowadays I try to eat healthy-ish on the road, I exercise as much as I can and as soon as I get home from a gig, no matter where I've been or what time it is, I take my dog out for a walk.
It's so easy to get lazy and it's so easy to just sit down after a long day, but don't forget, energy begets energy, so move. Especially if you have significant periods of inactivity. Get up and move. Move as little or as slowly as you like, but move!
