Dr. Footlights

One of the strangest things I've experienced since becoming a professional entertainer, is what's known in some circles as ‘Dr. Footlights’.

In the past, if I have felt poorly in any way, I've taken a sick day. I've always stood by the belief that my health is more important than minimum wage, or even a pretty good wage.

I've never taken a sick day from performing though, regardless of how well paid the gig is, or isn't. I can feel terrible on the drive to the gig and I can feel terrible on the way back, but as soon as I step in front of that audience I am alive! The energy comes from… well, I don't know, but it comes and it carries me through the show! I may have had a sore throat or croaky voice, but Chester still speaks.

I discovered that this is quite common amongst entertainers. I believe it must be true of anyone who loves what they do. If you can get to the gig, you can do the gig. So put up with getting out of bed, endure the journey (as long as you can get there safely), because once you're there and you're doing what you love, you are On!

You can always go back to bed later.

Obviously, be sensible though.

If you are genuinely unable to go and do it, don't. Nothing is worth risking your health.
