I Don't Like Magic!
I don't think I've ever said this, but I've heard it several times.
When I go around, performing close-up illusions at a wedding, corporate event or restaurant, there is always someone who will loudly tell me that they do not like magic.
That's completely fine. I don't like football, people find that unusual, but I don't judge the millions of people who do like the game.
Not liking magic and not letting others enjoy it are different things. If you don't want to see what I do, I genuinely won't be offended, but if others at your table do want to see some tricks, then you're just going to have to look away for a few minutes. I won't deny them some entertainment.
This does happen at school shows and kids parties too. Usually the kids aged between 9 and 12 are the ones who will loudly tut and sigh while taking their seat, but, as with the reluctant adults, within the first ten or twenty minutes, I usually catch them at least smirking, or at most laughing out loud.
I’ve found that almost every adult who claims not to like magic has had a bad experience with it.
They might think that pulling a coin from behind the ear is the pinnacle of magic, and they've seen that, so…
Or maybe they have been at an event in the past and met an arrogant or sleazy or cheesy magician (there are plenty out there).
Whatever the reason, all I want these people to do (maybe you're one of them), is just give it a chance. Give me three to five minutes and I'll try my best to make you smile 🙂
