I Know You…
This past Sunday, while performing at Viva Brazil in Glasgow, I got taking to a family. I thought I recognised the mum/wife of the group, but realised I didn't… but I kind of did. She was a twin, and her twin sister lived in my hometown. That's who I knew. This sister knew who I was though (my hometown is quite small, and not many magicians live there) and she said to me, 'You always see someone you know, wherever you go.’
As well as being a nice little rhyme, I think she's right.
In April 2015, I performed a children's and family magic show at New Lanark, a lovely little tourist village which is about 4 miles from my house. It was busy… very busy and a lot of fun.
Fast forward to August of the same year, and I was standing with my own family in the queue for the E.T. ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.
I was just looking at the posters of the funny shaped alien, when I heard 'Awrite mate,’ the common greeting from where I live.
I turned around and saw another family. Definitely tourists, all pale with angry red patches of sun on their skin, which is exactly how my family and I looked, and I nodded a hello.
The dad/husband of that group said ‘Show us a trick,’ I looked at him confused and he went on. ‘We saw you at New Lanark at Easter. You were great!’ I laughed and thanked him, and couldn't believe it!
I've had actors, bouncers and my step-kids teachers recognise me from magic. I think I'm introducing myself to them for the first time, and they beat me to the punch by letting me know that they already know me.
I guess it is a small world after all.
